'Live confessions' urged in news conference PDF Print E-mail

Beating confessions out of protestors isn't enough.  It is suggested by a member of the Iranian parliament that they should be broadcasted live.

A Principlist parliamentarian has called for a news conference in which the detained political figures 'confess what they were after'.

Dozens of opposition figures, arrested in the aftermath of the disputed presidential election, were put on trial on Saturday on charges of 'acting against national security' and 'conspiring with foreign powers to stage a "Velvet Revolution"'.

Reformist figure Mohammad-Ali Abtahi 'confessed' during the Saturday hearing that defeated presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi, former president Mohammad Khatami and head of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani took an 'oath' to have one another's backs as they prepared to stage the 'Velvet Revolution'.

“There should also be a news conference where the confessions are retold in the presence of domestic and foreign reporters. If deemed appropriate, these confessions should be broadcast live on TV,” said Bijan Nobaveh, a Principlist member of the Parliament.

Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi disputed the June 12 election results, which announced Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the winner with two-thirds of votes.

Reformist figures have rejected the trial as a 'show', questioning the legitimacy of confessions and the methods by which they were extracted.

Before the trial, some Principlist figures had also criticized the government's decision to broadcast the confessions.

The second court session for the detained opposition figures will be held on Thursday, one day after Ahmadinejad is to be sworn-in as president for a second term.
